How to Reach Rome

By Air

Rome is served by two main international airports:

  • Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Fiumicino - FCO): located about 30 km (19 miles) from the city center. It is the largest and busiest airport in Italy, offering numerous international and domestic flights.
    • Train: The Leonardo Express is a non-stop train connecting the airport to Roma Termini in about 32 minutes. One-way ticket: approx. €14.
    • Bus: Several bus companies (like Sit Bus Shuttle, Terravision, TAM) connect the airport to Termini Station. Ticket prices: approx. €6–7.
    • Taxi: A fixed fare of €50 applies to trips between Fiumicino and central Rome.
  • Ciampino Airport (CIA): located about 15 km (9 miles) from the center. It mainly serves low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and WizzAir.
    • Bus: Direct buses (Terravision, Sit Shuttle, Rome Airport Bus) take approx. 40 minutes to reach Termini Station. Tickets: approx. €5–6.
    • Taxi: Fixed fare of €31 to central Rome.
By Train

Rome is extremely well connected by high-speed trains from all over Italy and Europe.

  • Roma Termini: Main train station in Rome, centrally located. High-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Italo) connect Rome with Florence, Milan, Naples, Venice, and beyond.
  • Roma Tiburtina: A secondary high-speed train hub, especially for northbound connections and regional lines.
  • Roma Ostiense: Convenient for connections to the coast and some regional trains.

You can book train tickets via the national rail operators: Trenitalia or Italo.

By Road

Rome is connected by a vast motorway network:

  • From the north (Florence/Milan): A1 Autostrada del Sole, exit at “Roma Nord” and follow signs for the city center.
  • From the south (Naples): Take A1 and exit at “Roma Est”.
  • From Fiumicino Airport: Take A91 motorway toward Rome.

Note: The historic center has limited traffic zones (ZTL), and access is restricted during most of the day.

By Buses

Long-distance buses arrive at Tiburtina Bus Station, connected to the metro and regional trains.

  • Flixbus
  • Itabus
  • MarinoBus

They provide services from most major Italian and European cities.

Public Transport in Rome
  • 3 Metro lines (A, B, C)
  • Extensive bus, tram, and regional rail services run by ATAC.
  • A BIT ticket (€1.50) is valid for 100 minutes on buses, trams, and one metro ride.
  • Daily, 48h, 72h, and weekly passes are available at stations and tobacconists.

Rome’s historic center is best explored on foot, but public transport is very useful for reaching archaeological sites like the Vatican, Colosseum, and the Appian Way.
